Jenson Brooksby won the Maiden ATP title at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Sunday, capturing 2023 champion Francistiáfe to close out the fantastic tournament that began as a wild card in the qualifying round.
The victory was even sweeter for the 24-year-old American, who lost most of his career in 2023 due to drug testing and halting two wrist surgeries.
“It means the world,” Brooksby said after a 6-4, 6-2 victory over second-seeded Tier Four.
“It was one of my biggest goals as I am a professional tennis player. Having my first tennis player means a lot. Probably the best week of my life.”
Brooksby appeared in the tournament in 507, following a major disruption to his career since 1990, and also became the third lowest champion in tour history.
He was hit by an 18-month suspension in October 2023 with three “failed places” for 12 months, but after challenging the second Test, he reduced the suspension to 13 months of appeal in the sports court of arbitration.
Stolen by injuries during and after pause, he returned to tennis at the Australian Open earlier this year, losing to compatriot Taylor Fritz in the first round.
Brooksby patiently and saved multiple match points in three matches to win at Houston.
“I had a lot of different life adversities, whether it was in court or in court,” Brooksby said.
“So I think I’m going to create these situations… I’m still nervous about them and certainly a little tense, but if you have to face other difficulties in life, it gives you a different perspective.
“I’m just averse to losing and generally love winning. While tennis is obviously the most important thing, tennis is also the most important thing in other games as well.
“I really love winning, so I move when I’m in a tough position and maybe you should lose in such a situation, and at least you can find a way out of it.”
