Kevin Durant’s trade speculation continues to be strengthened throughout the NBA. Recent reports show only two teams with serious candidates for superstar forwards remaining.
The San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets have emerged as major destinations. Both franchises have the assets needed to make a competitive offer to Kevin Durant’s services.
San Antonio will take part in the negotiations with impressive weapons from 13 first-round picks through 2031, including the second and 14th selection of this year.
The Spurs can also offer established players such as Devin Vassel, Keldon Johnson and Harrison Burns, depending on their payroll requirements.
Young prospect Stephon Castle could serve as a temptation to make a deal in Phoenix. His possibilities, combined with San Antonio’s draft capital, create an attractive package.
Houston brings a different approach to proven young talent like Alperen Sengung, Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr.
All three players have NBA experience and can quickly help the Suns stay competitive while rebuilding their roster.
NBA insider Jon Krawczynski believes Jimmy Butler Trade Saga is offering important lessons for the Durant situation.
Butler initially preferred to join Phoenix before moving from Miami to Golden State earlier this year.
However, the Sands salary cap restrictions and Bradley Beal’s non-trade clause ultimately prevented the transaction from realising.
Butler eventually landed alongside the Warriors, where he helped Golden State reach the second round of the playoffs.
Butler’s precedent suggests that Durant’s preferred destination may not become a reality. Teams such as the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves are actively pursuing veteran scorers.
Minnesota was able to provide Phoenix with Rudy Gortbert or Julius Randle, who could effectively support Devin Booker. Meanwhile, Durant can work with Anthony Edwards to bring the title to Minnesota.
Timberwolves also has salaries matching, such as Donte Divincenzo and young prospects Rob Dillingham and Terrence Shannon Jr.
The Heat will present another interesting option with young center Kel-Elware and two first round picks if a deal is made prior to this month’s draft.
Durant may have his preferences, but NBA history shows that market flexibility often sends stars to unexpected destinations. Over the next few weeks, the future Hall of Fame will determine where he will continue his pursuit of the championship.
