Justin Thomas has a fill-in caddy in his bag at Master of the Week.
Joe Greiner, who recently split up with Max Homa, will partner with Thomas, who said his regular caddy, Minister Matt “Passion” had hurt his back and could not get into his bag.
“Rev is on a break so he’ll get better soon,” Thomas wrote on social media. “I’m very fortunate Joe Greiner is a great friend and can help me at the last minute.”
Thomas told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington that the caddy movement has all happened in the past 36 hours. Greiner was not paired with Thomas in the practice round at Augusta National on Tuesday.
Greiner was in a Homa bag last year when he was tied up to third place at Augusta National. Unfortunately for HOMA, a six-time PGA Tour winner who once ranked fifth in the world, he was in a terrible slump, leading to a split with Greiner before the Valero Texas Open last week.
Earlier Tuesday, Homa, who is at Masters Field this week, explained in a split with his childhood friend Greiner, who said that it wasn’t his choice.
“We were always friends first, friendship was more important than work, and he was wise enough to do what he did,” Homa said.
“It’s tough. I’m so used to him being a caddy… but I was happy he did it – at the end of my days, we’re one of us keeps responsing to others about how difficult this game is.
“So I always imagined walking the fairway with Joe, so I suck. But it wasn’t – it wasn’t a contract. I want to live life with Joe forever than this stupid game, so friendship is more important than anything like this.”
Bill Hake has been in Homa’s bag since Grayner split.
