Joe Pyfer is the latest UFC fighter who is unhappy with the promotion’s pointless ranking system.
“Bodybagz” won the biggest victory of his career last month, winning a unanimous decision victory over Kelvin Gastherm at UFC 316 in New Jersey.
Despite being on top, Pyfer didn’t find the number next to his name the following Monday.
“After Kelvin Gastherm won, I’m not a ranked UFC middleweight,” Pyfer told MMA Junkie. “I beat the Hall of Fame legend for a fight with Izzy, and then you got three and two people who are already ranked in the number 11 or top 15. I think that’s ridiculous. That’s right.
UFC rankings are often criticized by fans and fighters, but this is one situation where it could have actually made it right.
Gastherm is considered by many to be a sport legend. As “Bodybagz” said, he is a UFC Hall of Fame and a former interim title challenger. However, the fact remains that Gastherm is not a ranked fighter, and that he steps into the Octagon with Piffer before he was only 2-3 with his last five.
If Pyfer wants a number next to his name, he needs to look elsewhere. Perhaps it’s a battle with No. 15th candidate Abs Magomedov?
