John Jones has a room where all of his fight posters are displayed stand out, just like the head-bearing Hunter of his latest murder.
And in “Bones” there is a place reserved for Tom Aspinel.
Fighting fans are slowly filling up to see Jones and Aspinel solve things in the Octagon for over a year. Unfortunately, despite UFC Dana White’s promise to bring about the biggest conflict in heavyweight history in 2025, we don’t seem to get close to seeing it happen.
As a result, Aspinall is now the longest intervening interim champion in UFC history, but “Bones” is the second-longest heavyweight title holder and just a small part of Cain Verasquez.
John Jones claims his story is “still written”
Jones and Aspinel have been in active negotiations since “Bones” won their third TKO in November, with both fighters expressing optimism and uncertainty along the way.
Looking back on his legendary career, Jones conveyed his message on Instagram.
“Now, as you can see… I haven’t framed or hung Stipe fights yet,” Jones wrote. “I’ve been traveling a million miles per hour recently, but my final perfect place remains on the wall of victory.”
“And when I look at this wall, it really hits me. This is more than just artwork. It’s a heritage. Every poster tells a story. Different chapters. Different houses. Different battles.
“I said before, my career wasn’t perfect, but it was undoubtedly legendary. Epic.
“What is I most proud of? I have evolved. I am more than just a fighter. I am faith, my family, my loyal brothers in my team, my businessmen, leaders, the man in my community, and I know.
“The walls are almost filled… But trust me, the story is still written. The best hasn’t come yet.”
Another January return at Madison Square Garden appears likely for John Jones as Ilia Topuria recently made his appearance at UFC 317 during International Combat Week and confirmed that the promotional summer slate will be filled quickly.
But if things don’t end up together, it sounds like the UFC has a backup plan in place.
