The move to the New York Knicks changed the trajectory of Jaren Branson’s career.
Jalen Brunson has evolved from the secondary player behind Dallas’ Luka Doncic to the leading star of the Knicks, increasing production to over 20 points per game, earning All-Star and All-NBA recognition.
But former player John Wall believes Branson’s success comes from Tom Thibodeau’s system rather than individual brilliance.
Wall’s concerns are concentrated on how changes in coaching will affect Branson’s continued development.
Thibodeau’s belief in Branson as the Knicks leader proved essential to his transformation.
Derrick Rose provided a blueprint for Branson’s success as a history of the Star Point Guard development, particularly during his tenure with the Chicago Bulls.
“It’s been amazing for the past two years (he’s) but like I said on D-Rose, he’s a point guard and that’s the show of Tib,” Wall explained.
Thibodeau’s system maximized Branson’s strengths while providing the minutes and responsibilities needed for star-level production.
His coach’s faith in point guards created an environment for Branson’s statistical explosion.
Wall has expressed concern about Branson’s future under new head coach Mike Brown, known primarily as a defensively oriented coach who may change the offensive approach that has made him a successful player.
“Is Mike Brown going to play the same thing? Will he change the offense? The wall was asked.
“If I got 25 shots in the game, I want to cut my shots to 12-15. It’s even more efficient,” Wall added.
The Washington Wizards legend also suspects there is a huge story behind Thibodeau’s astonishing fire after leading the team to the Eastern Conference Finals.
“It’s probably what the players wanted, or what the front office wanted. That’s what it sums up. They’re not going to say that to the camera, they’ll let the GM do that.”
Despite the changes in coaching, the Knicks still need Branson to remain a cornerstone player, but he may need to adapt to another system while maintaining high production levels.
