After a contract stalemate over the summer, the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga have agreed to a new contract.
Jonathan Kuminga has agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million contract to return to the Golden State Warriors.
However, Kuminga will be eligible for a trade on January 15, 2026, so his future with the Warriors is still up in the air.
Despite the noise, Kuminga remains focused on the start of the 2025-26 NBA season.
If there’s one thing that’s unpredictable about the Warriors, it’s how they will utilize Kuminga.
He doesn’t have a defined role within the team and his playing time has been inconsistent over the years.
Even Kuminga acknowledged that he hasn’t played a consistent role in Golden State. He told Andscape’s Mark J. Spears that he had no intention of asking head coach Steve Kerr about the role.
“I don’t ask (Kerr) about the role because I know what he’s going to tell me.
“I don’t waste energy.
“I decided not to ask because no one is going to tell me, whatever it is, I have to go out and find a way to do things.
“Make plays, defend. I don’t have a consistent role. I just play defense and run the floor.”
Despite his situation with the Warriors, Kuminga remains optimistic and upbeat.
Kuminga also told Spears that he is working on becoming a big X-factor for the team. At 23 years old, he has the skill set that can make a difference.
“I am working towards being an ‘X-factor’.
“He’s a guy that’s on both sides of the ball, both defensively and old-school offense-wise. So I just have to find a way to help so we can win a championship.”
Kuminga’s dedication to playing at a high level is reassuring to Warriors fans.
He showed signs of becoming a star in the second round of the playoffs and was given an increased role. I hope that will lead to the start of this season.
