UFC veteran Jorge Masvidal has been awarded a default judgment in his lawsuit against Fanmio, which promoted his 2024 boxing match with Nate Diaz.
On Tuesday, Judge Beatriz Butico Sanchez formally approved Masvidal’s request to grant a final default judgment against Juanmio after an arbitrator awarded the former welterweight title challenger $5,315,268.64 plus post-judgment interest on the unpaid Diaz fight.
Masvidal filed the lawsuit after initially signing a contract to fight Diaz for $6 million (which would increase to $7 million if he wins). Masvidal ultimately lost the fight, but claimed he was only paid $1 million plus a $150,000 advance.
Masvidal took the matter to an arbitrator in January after Juanmio refused to pay.
The arbitrator ultimately sided with Masvidal and ordered Juanmio to pay the fighters $4.85 million in damages and $5,315,268.64, including attorney fees and interest.
This time, the judge granted Masvidal’s motion for a final default judgment for unpaid money from Juanmio.
Diaz specifically named in his lawsuit that Juanmio and owner and president Solomon Engel allegedly agreed to pay $10 million to fight Masvidal. According to the complaint, Juanmio paid Diaz $1 million upfront and agreed to pay him another $9 million after the fight.
Another arbitrator overseeing the case also awarded Diaz $6 million in damages and an additional $500,000 in fines, attorney fees and interest to Fanmio founder Solomon Engel, who was found personally liable.
Diaz is also currently awaiting final approval of the arbitration award from a federal judge.
