According to Charles Watts, Arsenal left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko has had serious interest from AC Milan this summer, but was able to wait for him to set out for a free transfer next year.

Exclusive Writing of the Week Catch off side In the column, Watts provided insight into the situation in Zinchenko, revealing that Ukraine International could leave Emirates Stadium.

There’s more competition for a left-back location on Mikel Arteta’s side. So Zinchenko fell out of a boring order and didn’t play much in the last year or so.

Miles Lewis Skelly appears to be the first choice on the left side of the back four. In other words, there was speculation that Milan wanted Ricardo Calfioli.

However, he added that he can see the former Manchester City defender running down his contract and leaving the free transfer next year.

“I think Riccardo Carafioli will play a major role at Arsenal next season, with the arrival of Miles Lewis Skelly,” Watts said.

“I have seen some exit suggestions that AC Milan could be pushing him this summer, but I can’t see it myself, and I think he can provide a lot.

He added: “That’s a different story from Oleksandr Zinchenko. He is a player sold by Arsenal, and the words from Italy mean that Milan’s interest in him is serious.

“But wages may be problematic there. I don’t know if Zinchenko will hurry away. He has a year left in his deal and he’s making money at Arsenal.

“So, it’s not surprising me if he stays and sees his contract before evaluating his options as a free agent next year.”
