British tennis player Katie Boulter shares details of the “nasty” abuse and death threats she and her family have suffered.
Speaking to the BBC, the 28-year-old provided a screenshot of the message. Another included the death threat of “candles and co for the whole family.”
“I went to hell and lost the money my mother sent me,” read another message Boulter received.
“Every time you go to your phone, it becomes clearer,” Boulter told the BBC. “I think it’s just an indication of how vulnerable we are. I don’t know if this person is on the scene, if they’re nearby, if they know where you live or if they know anything like that.”
A message containing the threat of death was sent to Boulter while she was playing an open-round match in France with Carol Monnett.
“As far as death threats go, that’s not something you want to read right after an emotional loss. It’s a lot of time you’ve got it after you win,” Boulter said.
UK No. 2 also spoke about the explicit message she received and her concerns about the younger players.
“I had quite a few of these kinds (explicit images) as well, a big problem. Young people shouldn’t really see something like that or send something like that.” Boulter was added.
Boulter will begin defending Nottingham’s open title on Tuesday to take on New Zealand’s Lulussan in 32 stages.
