Steve Kerr is one of the greatest coaches in the NBA, certified in four championships. Unfortunately, people hate how he uses young players like Jonathan Cuminga on his roster. Former NBA champion and NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins called him for this.
The Golden State Warriors are one of the most successful teams of the 21st century. Head coach Steve Kerr is a key part of that and leads him to four championships. Of course, most people point out Stephen Curry and the other players.
Despite his success, Kerr still has some weaknesses in his coaching style. Most notable is his reluctance to take advantage of his younger players, especially after the 2022 championship. Jonathan Kuminga shows that he has tremendous potential, but Kerr didn’t like him.
This makes Cuminga look for opportunities elsewhere, including a handshake agreement with the Sacramento Kings. He wants to stay with the team on a $30 million deal, but the Warriors hate the idea. Kendrick Perkins is sure to call for this because he sees Kerr as a major weakness.
Perkins has seen how the Golden State Warriors are looking for for the 2025-26 season. They have a strong roster found by Curry, Draymond Green and most older player Jimmy Butler.
Warriors have promising players, but Kerr isn’t playing well enough for proper development. With the exception of Brandin Podziemski and Kuminga, some believe they haven’t played enough yet. Perkins believes that because he believes Kerr hasn’t taken the right approach with his team.
On the Lord Trippin episode, Perkins spoke to Richard Jefferson and Ally Clifton about the Warriors situation. Everyone provided a good analysis, but Perkins ranted about Kerr and his struggle with his young player.
“In my opinion, Steve Kerr struggles to make young people great. Is that so? The only person I’ve seen him wrap his arms as a young man is Posiemski,” Perkins said on Lord Trippin.
“And then Podziemski will have a long career as a role player. But when it comes to someone who’s promoted, when you see a guy who could become a man in the franchise, Steve Kerr is holding these guys down.”
The NBA is heading in a more youthful direction after the Oklahoma City Thunder championship. Of course, the veterans still have space in the sport, but the Thunder pivoted the team alongside the second apron.
The Warriors operate on Steph Curry’s timeline, which is spectacular. He brought four championships to the Bay Area, so it’s good to maximize his windows. However, the Warriors still need to think about their long-term future.
Carr can do that by developing younger players and becoming part of the core. Unfortunately, players like Kuminga and James Wiseman were unable to obtain any indication of car’s approval. Kuminga could leave, but Wiseman was unable to succeed in the warrior.
Perkins brings a valid point in Kerr’s dislike for using young players. With the veteran core in mind, it would be difficult to improve this situation. The Golden State does its best, but the Warriors have short windows.
