He appears to be following in the footsteps of Victor Wenbagnama and reaching out to NBA legends like Kevin Garnett.
Victor Wembanyama has been a breath of fresh air for the NBA since its arrival in 2023.
Wenbanyama is a bit of a throwback in terms of approach to basketball. And I try to improve every year.
This summer, when Wembanyama reached out to Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett, we saw an incredible example.
I’ve seen players like LeBron James reach out to Orajuwon and other legends in the past. And it appears that Wenby has regained this trend.
Kevin Garnett was a guest commentator for the New Orleans Pelican overseas preseason game against Australia’s southeastern Melbourne Phoenix.
Garnett revealed he’s getting more calls from younger NBA players and more calls to help them with their mental and physical skills.
He then went out on the tangent about how young players of today’s generation do not have the spirit that the players of his time did.
“I’ve had a few calls this summer from a few guys and they just helped me out. Many of these young kids have problems with how they think…
“It takes some discipline and consistency. I don’t know if any of these young players are being taught that today. If the younger guys don’t want to do something, they just quit.
“Man, in our time, you had a coach behind you, telling you A, B, and C, you had to finish your training.
“These workouts were an hour, 45 minutes. Today’s workouts are only 20 minutes because kids can’t consume (information) like they used to.”
It’s hard to understand why Kevin Garnett used the player to reach out to him as a way to summon the current generation.
This serves as yet another example of past players who trust the current era of the stars. And the worst part is that what he’s saying is wrong.
More than ever, NBA players have seen them physically pass the ringer not only during the game but also during training.
In fact, Eddie Johnson has denounced modern NBA trainers for hiring players during the offseason. And that’s not the only evidence.
NBA players suffer more brutal injuries than ever before. Many NBA stars suffered Achilles injuries in the last season in a few months.
Hopefully, players and teams can figure out how to handle the harsh nature of their NBA schedules and playstyles.
