Klay Thompson experienced a statistical decline in his first year with the Dallas Mavericks last season.
He averaged 14.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, marking his lowest scoring output since his rookie season.
The numbers reflect Thompson’s struggle to adapt to life outside of the Golden State system.
Entering next season, however, Thompson’s main focus will not be improving statistical production or setting scoring goals.
Instead, Klay Thompson set the goal of becoming an exemplary veteran of Mavericks rookie Cooper Flag.
The former Warriors champion hopes that the number one pick will see him as an inspirational person worth emulating.
“When I was a freshman, I wasn’t doing what he did, but I remember I was a young player in this league. You were very impressed by what veterans do,” Thompson explained.
“And I want to set an example. I want to show you how much this means to me. The same thing with Anthony and Kylie. We really value what we do, so I just want to leave a good impression on him so he can advance into his career, and “Clay was my veterinarian.”
Thompson emphasized that the impact of mentorship exceeds individual performance achievements at current career stages.
“It’s honestly bigger than the night of scoring I can get in the future. As long as I’m a leader and veteran, it leaves a huge mark on this franchise,” he added.
Flags acquire valuable knowledge from Thompson, particularly regarding championship mentality and winning habits.
The rookie has the advantage of joining the Mavericks, surrounded by skilled veterans.
Beyond Thompson, Flag can learn from Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving. Both have championship experience and elite skill sets.
The presence of this veteran provides an ideal development environment for a very well-known outlook when he begins his NBA career.
