La Lakers is evaluating their options as they are about to sign a roster with Marcus Smart.
Shams Charania reports that La Lakers will add Marcus Smart following the acquisition of Washington’s Wizard.
He broke the news. “Marcus Smart agrees to acquire the deal with Washington Wizard and after clearing the exemption, he plans to sign a two-year, $11 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.”
To complete the Marcus Smart signing, the Lakers will need to create a payroll space. This could mean giving up two players.
Shake Milton and Jord Goodwin are both vulnerable to being cut so that the Lakers can sign the 31-year-old.
Jordan Goodwin is a brand new story for La Lakers. After being drafted in 2021 and greeted by the Washington Wizards, he fell on the South Bay Lakers roster early last season.
Goodwin was the one who made the most of his two-way contract and ended up playing 29 regular season games for the Lakers, including five starts.
According to Clutch Point’s Antony Irwin, the LA Lakers are exploring a roster move that will keep Goodwin. The problem is that time opposes them.
The Lakers will need to abandon Milton until Sunday, which appears to be inevitable at this stage.
Irwin reports that despite their intentions there is no guarantee that they will be able to maintain Goodwin.
He said:
“Ideally, they will mow the roster and avoid not having to abandon Goodwins, but if the number reported is correct and no deals are found, they should go.”
Lakers Nation’s Daniel Starkland added:
The Lakers were able to cut Goodwin and try to sign a two-way deal with him, but they risk surpassing the other teams.
La Lakers added Jordan Goodwin to his full-time roster in March, changing him from two-way trading.
Lakers legend James Worthy praised the Goodwin midseason, saying, “He doesn’t make many mistakes. He doesn’t take wise shots… he’s a rough player, a good defensive player.”
He added: “He’s the player you want to keep.”
