The Los Angeles Lakers are under great pressure to compete for at least the NBA Championship in the 2025-26 season.
JJ Redick is now the second-year head coach, Luka Doncic has adapted to his new environment, and Lebron James is approaching retirement for a year.
The Lakers front office has strengthened its roster since last season despite Dorian Finney Smith’s departure.
But ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst believes general manager Rob Perinka will need to close another deal this offseason.
Donsic appears happy with the Dallas Mavericks and has no interest in switching teams, but the decision was taken out of his hands when GM Nico Harrison traded him for the La Lakers.
He was proud to be a Laker and was excited to team up with LeBron James, but there was no guarantee that he would be willing to sign an extension of his contract.
Well, it seems like it’s more likely that Donsic will re-sign LA now. This sees Windhorst as “one of the biggest winners” this offseason.
“We can’t overstate how disadvantageous the Lakers are to lose their ability to give Luka a Super Max,” Windhorst said. “He has been completely removed this year to extend his contract.
“The only reason he wants is because he believes in the Lakers, the team he didn’t ask for to trade. If he says, ‘I’ll trade me for LA,’ that’s another thing.
“So from the moment I was shocked that Luka is a Laker, I’m focusing on whether he’s going to sign or not, and the sign points to signature. I’m not going to dismiss it as a key moment.
“Even if the Lakers tried to make it look like it wasn’t really a big deal, I didn’t think it was a guarantee. I think it’s a big deal. If that happens, I think the Lakers are one of the big winners of the entire NBA this summer.”
The LeBron James and La Lakers organizations already know what it’s like, but the great pressure on Luka Donsic is approaching will be a new experience for him.
It’s not anticipation, it’s aspiration, not expectation, to win the championship without underestimating the Dallas Mavericks.
Currently, in Los Angeles, Don Sic is expected to follow in the footsteps of James, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and Magic Johnson, adding another banner to the collection.
| year | winner | Final MVP | year |
| 2025 | Oklahoma City Thunder | Shy Gilgaus Alexander | 26 |
| 2024 | Boston Celtics | Jalen Brown | 27 |
| 2023 | Denver Nuggets | Nicola Jokic | 28 |
| 2022 | Golden State Warriors | Stephen Curry | 34 |
| 2021 | Milwaukee Bucks | Giannis Antetokounmpo | 26 |
Furthermore, if he doesn’t win the title immediately, Donsic’s position within the league will be a hit. In addition to Stephen Curry, who already has three rings, all the recipients of the latest Final MVP were under 28 years old.
Doncic turns 27 in February, so it’s when he delivered in the postseason like Shai Ggeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic and others.
