There are currently only two WorldSBK rounds left in Jonathan Rea’s full-time racing career, with back-to-back rounds taking place this weekend (10-12 October) in Estoril and just seven days later in Jerez.
Rea admits it has been a strange feeling heading into the final two races of the Superbike World Championship, especially coming on back-to-back weekends, but he is also feeling optimistic after strong results in the last two races in France and Aragon.
“Honestly, I have mixed feelings,” Jonathan Rea told WorldSBK.com ahead of the Estoril round.
“I think this was the most difficult load I have ever carried, as I was planning to go out between Estoril and Jerez.
“It’s very strange to be honest, but I’m looking forward to it, especially after a good Sunday in Aragon and an equally good Sunday in Magny-Cours.
“If we can build this momentum heading into the weekend, I feel comfortable on the bike and can maximize its potential and get a good result.”
Ray was able to compete for a top-six spot last year as well, eventually finishing in the top-five in both long races.
But the Pata Yamaha rider wants to avoid expectations at the end of his full-time World Superbike career.
“I don’t want to get too hung up on expectations, but I think I had a solid year last year. I think I really improved on the bike as well,” he said.
“But like anything else, everyone is growing and the benchmark is even higher this year.”
This weekend’s addition is the addition of a new Pirelli front tire, with two development options available for the rear tire as well.
“We have to try to get through Friday,” Rea said. “Pirelli introduced some new front tires to try out. The SCX tires are back. SCQ as well (as well).”
“Tomorrow will be a bit of an evaluation of what will happen.
“But if we can put it together and maximize our qualification, I see no reason why we can’t at least aim to compete within the top five.”
