The second apron rule has made life difficult for modern NBA teams.
The impact of the second apron was recently seen when the Boston Celtics blasted their championship-winning core to avoid paying massive luxury taxes.
But who is responsible for the NBA implementing this rule? According to NBA legend, Charles Barkley should be held responsible by LeBron James and Kevin Durant.
James and Durant are two of the best players of this generation, but they were once the villains of the league.
James was very much disliked his decision to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosch at the 2010 Miami Heat. Meanwhile, KD’s decision to sign with the 73-9 Golden State Warriors portrayed him as the villain.
With these controversial moves in mind, Berkley believes that Commissioner Adam Silver must introduce a second apron.
“If there’s a dollar each time you hear “second apron,” why did Adam Silver have to put in a second apron? Because LeBron brought them all together. KD went out to play with the Warriors,” Berkley told Bill Simmons.
He added: “We don’t want to compete with each other because we don’t want to win a championship. Don’t be mad at Adam Silver.
The second apron ended the possibility of a dynasty that essentially existed for more than a few years. Of course, if the owner is willing to pay large luxury taxes, they can fund the super team for a long period of time.
The LBJ and KD super teams certainly smash the league’s balance, but you might ask why the rest of the NBA should pay the price.
After all, that’s not fair to other teams, right? Well, Berkley crushed that story too.
“When I heard, I hate it, man, the second apron is not fair. What does it mean that it’s not fair?” he continued.
“If Y’all stops wanting to play together, there’s no need to supplement the Bogus A__ rules to stop Y’all from playing together,” Chuck concluded.
The next team currently suffering for the second apron is probably the Oklahoma City Thunder.
They are currently the defending NBA champions, but the Thunder could face a second apron trouble in the 2026-27 season, as stars like Chetholmglen and Jalen Williams have signed large contract extensions.
