LeBron James will remain the Lakers’ biggest contract player.

LeBron James is one of the best, if not the best ever. The 40-year-old star is defiant by playing at the highest possible level.

But because of his greatness, James is no longer at the level where he can make his team great on his shoulders.

Even Luka Donsic’s legendary partner, James needs more solid teammates to set up a real championship fight.

There was speculation about LeBron James’ future with the Lakers. However, a new report suggests he will be with the Lakers. But it sacrifices the freedom to land a new star on the team.

According to Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report, Lebron James knows what to do this offseason. James has a $52.6 million player option the following year.

However, LeBron opts out of that player option and re-signs with the Lakers on a two-year, $105 million deal, giving him flexibility in 2026.

“He holds a $52.6 million player option next season and may be interested simply to pick it up.”

“If it made it clear that this was his final go-round, the Lakers could celebrate every step of his step on a farewell tour throughout the season.

“Maybe he’s not interested in putting that much finality on it, but he could potentially be eligible for the draft in 2026 with his son, Bryce James.”

“LeBron is incredible that it lasts long enough to team up with Bronnie James, but working together with both of his sons certainly has an appeal.”

“James should look for him to give James a bit of a wavy room by rejecting his options in a two-year, $105 million deal for two years with player options and re-signing him with the Lakers.”

Given the Lakers need to make changes to their roster to build around Luka Donsic, it’s surprising that LeBron James refused to cut his pay.

James is at the point of his career, earning more money on his off-court support than his NBA salary. And he could afford to get a pay raise and even landed Klay Thompson or a decent third option last year, offering to take one for the Lakers.

Doncic is likely to sign a major contract extension too, so the Lakers are very limited in signatures they can do to address their weaknesses.

Especially considering James himself called the Lakers’ current roster not enough to win the championship.

In addition to this Austin Reeves, who is likely to be traded to avoid losing him anything, James puts the Lakers in a tough position.
