Luka Doncic’s physical transformation has become one of the hottest topics this summer.
Doncic looked noticeably leaner and healthier during the EuroBasket 2025 tournament, and had impressive performances throughout the tournament.
Luka Doncic further demonstrated improved defensive ability and was nominated for Defensive Player of the Year.
The Slovenian superstar seems ready to deal with criticism regarding both his fitness and his defensive approach.
However, Lakers teammate LeBron James believes the main benefits of this transformation won’t be seen during games.
LeBron maintains that Doncic will remain the same elite player regardless, as there will be a real difference in recovery speed between games.
“He just looks a little faster and a little more functional, but what people don’t really see is the recovery right now,” LeBron explained.
“It doesn’t change Luka’s game when he’s in top physical condition, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t score 30, 40, 10, 12 points. That doesn’t change, but I personally think it changes how Luka wakes up the next day.”
“You’ve built this body and it’s going to be very beneficial to you and your recovery process and your image. I’m so proud of him,” he added.
LeBron speaks from a wealth of personal experience when it comes to taking care of his body and the length of his career.
He is perhaps the best example of how proper physical maintenance allows for sustained excellence, entering his 23rd season in top condition.
Next season, LeBron will be aiming for his fifth championship alongside Doncic and hopes the Slovenian’s improved conditioning will lead to consistent strength and production.
Last season, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 7.5 assists and 8.1 rebounds per game in his first stint with the Lakers.
Those numbers came less than halfway through the season, raising expectations for his first full season in Los Angeles, which begins this month.
