Lewis Hamilton has revealed his “great relationship” with four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton and Vettel clashed for titles during their time in F1, particularly in 2017 and 2018 – with Hamilton at Mercedes and Vettel at Ferrari, fierce rivals.

Hamilton won both matches.

As Vettel’s form declined in his later years, his relationship with Hamilton blossomed.

The two became vocal on a variety of issues, sharing similar views on climate change, racism, and other social issues.

Ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix, Hamilton revealed he was still “in contact” with Vettel.

“I have a great relationship with Sebastian,” Hamilton said. “For me, out of all the drivers I’ve met in my career, he’s the most all-round driver.

“And when I talk about an all-round driver, I mean someone who, as a human being, is empathetic and very competitive, but also understands that there’s a bigger picture than just us.

“For him, there is no ‘me, me, me,’ it’s about bringing people together.

“I love that he’s using his platform. He’s supported me through some very intense times and he’s doing great today.

“We keep in touch. He supports me and texts me throughout the weekend. I’m forever grateful for our relationship.”

Hamilton asks Vettel for advice

Unsurprisingly, Hamilton faces similar challenges to those experienced by Vettel during his time at Ferrari.

Hamilton is pushing for changes behind the scenes to return the team to title-winning power.

Despite having strong seasons in 2015 and 2017, Vettel failed to make a big impact.

Earlier this year, Hamilton hinted that he would seek advice from Vettel as his first season at Ferrari faced difficulties.

“To be honest, I haven’t talked to either of them. I don’t really talk to Fernando. Seb, he’s been a really great support. He’s been really great over the years and is a really good friend,” he said earlier this year.

“I was going to talk to Seb during this vacation. I think I’ll do that soon. I don’t use my phone much, so I didn’t call him this year.”

“I didn’t want to bother him and I didn’t want to talk to him before because I didn’t want to be preconceived. I’ve had six to eight months of experience and I understand the situation well, so I’ll probably talk to him soon.”
