Liam Delap is determined to succeed at Chelsea despite being sent off in the League Cup last-16 tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2025 and has made 10 appearances, scoring just one goal.
Jones said team talk: “Delap always knew he was making a big decision to join Chelsea, because Chelsea are ruthless in their intra-team competition and won’t take passengers on board for long until they find their replacements.”
“Part of joining Chelsea was to push the limits of his ability, even at a young age.
“The problem with criticizing him for the red card is that part of the reason Chelsea signed him was because of his competitive traits.
“They were looking for someone young, strong, with a high ceiling, and they liked Delap because he had a mean personality.
“He has always shown his physicality and played with the risk of going over his mark.
“It’s hard to defend his red card because it was very stupid and I’m sure Chelsea will be annoyed because of the impact of it.
“But this is the risk you take on him. That may be part of what ultimately makes him great.”
“The flip side of that is that he’s good at getting people involved in the play, he’s a decisive, mobile player and he’s a very good finisher.
“He’s also very confident, but you can’t completely get rid of his lively personality.
“There is no chance that he will actively seek a move in January because he is a motivated, gutsy type of player and will probably also prove resilient.”
