Liverpool and Chelsea spent a lot of money between them during the summer 2025 transfer, but that could have been more. Both clubs were in the market for new central defenders who ultimately did not arrive. After all, they had similar goals.
Liverpool wanted to sign another centre-back to compete with Ibrahima Conate and new addition Giovanni Leoni. Meanwhile, after Levi Colwill tore his ACL, Chelsea came to the market, but they failed to take anyone.
Ronald Araujo rejected three Premier League offers
And now it is revealed that both clubs have been caught in a stone wall by Ronald Araujo. According to Sports (via Football Espania), the Barcelona defender received offers from Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Juventus, but he made it clear (via his representative) that he has no intention of leaving the Lygan giants.
Araujo was interested in leaving Barcelona in January, but he ultimately devoted himself to a new five-year contract. He has since established himself as a key player, making future moves difficult, but both Liverpool and Chelsea are ready to make another attempt in 2026.
There’s no doubt that Liverpool and Chelsea will try to sign at least one central defender in 2026. Araujo could still be on the radar, and Barcelona could be accepting the offer if they continue to struggle financially.
But even so, it would be difficult to keep Araujo moving, especially if he remains as Hanshiflic’s regular starter. So Liverpool and Chelsea may be forced to see elsewhere.
