Mackenzie Dern defeated Vilna Jandilova at UFC 321 to become the new strawweight world titleholder.
Dern was able to find his range early on, landing hard leg kicks and stimulating Jandiroba with combinations. In response, Jandiroba fired a double leg shot. Dern was briefly forced onto his back, but eventually got up and moved away.
Jandiroba scored another takedown before the bell, but accomplished little on the mat.
Jandiroba got two more takedowns in the second fight, but Dern did most of the damage with a flurry of low blows and elbows.
In the third, Jandiroba continued to combine striking and grappling, and Dern seemed willing to accept every takedown attempt offered by the Brazilian. Still, Dern was definitely the more aggressive fighter from the back, and he peppered Jandiroba with elbows.
Jandiroba began to show signs of stalling in the fourth, allowing Dern to control the action by pinning her against the cage. Dern finally got his grappling going late in the round, landing a slick double leg in the center of the Octagon. With less than a minute left, Jandilova remained on her back, content to avoid further damage.
Both fighters scored takedowns in the fifth and final round, but it was Dern who continued to outplay his opponent. Dern ended the match with a bomb off the top, earning him a unanimous decision victory and his first UFC title.
official results: Mackenzie Dern def. Vilna Jandirova won the vacant UFC strawweight world title by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).
