Murtle Beach, S.C. — Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes shot a 2-under 69 in windy conditions that earned the share of the second-round lead with Chile’s Cristobal del Solar on Friday at Myrtle Beach Classic.

Stroked after opening 63, Hughes had four birdies and two bogeys in the afternoon round at Dunes Golf and Beach Club.

“I’m in a good place to go on weekends,” Hughes said. “There are a lot of people who have the chance. Nothing will change tomorrow. Keep up with me and see where it places me.”

Del Solar rebounded from a par-4 8th-place bogey and scored a birdie that closed in par-3 9th. He shot 67 in the afternoon and joined Hughes at 10 under 132.

“I’ve been working, playing good golf and feeling more comfortable,” Del Solar said. “I’m happy to be where I am.”

Winners of the PGA Tour event, held opposite the signature event at this week’s Truist Championship, will win a spot if they do not yet qualify for the PGA Championship. Two-time Tour winner, Hughes is already on the field next week at Quail Hollow.

Nick Watney, a 44-year-old player who hasn’t won in 13 years, suffered a stroke after the age of 67. Danny Walker (67) was also shotback along with Harry Higgs (66), Will Chandler (69) and Davis Shore (66).
