Jack Draper advanced to the Madrid Open quarterfinals after a straight set victory over US Tommy Paul on Wednesday.

British No. 1 set up a meeting with Italy’s Matteo Arnardo, beating Paul 6-2, 6-2 and becoming his first Master 1000 quarterfinals at Clay.

Paul never recovered after breaking in the third game of the match, with Britt closing the first set in just over 30 minutes.

No. 11 seed rescued two breakpoints in the second set before Draper eventually broke him and proceeded to 3-2. He played the same two games to seal the game in style.

“I felt really good,” Draper told Sky Sports. “I know Tommy is a great player and I had to be with him from the off. I felt better.

“I think maybe for players from the UK, or players who don’t play often on this surface, they can get into it with the idea that they’re not great on it, and therefore prevent them from going further.

“I know I can play well on this surface, and it was my big goal this year to prove that I can play really well.
