Jacob Fianry, the No. 2 men in New England, was kicked out of court after his play was suspended at the Madrid Open on Monday due to widespread power outages affecting the Spanish and Portugal regions.
The suspension came at the key point of Fearnley’s 32 collisions with Grigor Dimitrov.
World No. 16 Dimitrov led 6-4, 6-4 when the blackout affected the electronic scoreboard and camera on the court.
Theoretically, the match could have continued alongside the line judge, but the camera position that is no longer responsive now meant that it was trapped in the player’s eyeliner.
After first waiting for the issue to be resolved, Fearnley and Dimitrov ultimately left the court before the tournament organizers finally confirmed that play had been suspended.
Fearnley’s compatriots Cameron Norrie and Jack Draper are scheduled to perform 32 contests later Monday.
