Playing at the Madrid Open Tennis Tournament was suspended on Monday due to massive blackouts reported in Spain and Portugal.
The ATP Tour stated that two singles and one doubles match were ongoing when power was generated at 12:34pm local time (1034 GMT).
“The cut has prevented the use of the electronic line calling system, and there are also spider cams hanging from the courts inside Manolo Santana Stadium,” added ATP.
Grigor Dimitrov was leading Jacob Fianley 6-4, 5-4 inside the main stadium when play stopped. Matteo Arnaldi also led the Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 3-2.
Some players were practicing despite the suspension, and remained in the stands where some people watched.
Two four-round women’s matches were completed just before the blackout.
Coco Gouf defeated Belinda Bensik 6-4, 6-2, while Mira Andreva defeated 6-1, 6-4
Gauff posted an Instagram story showing only emergency lights that otherwise work in dark locker rooms.
“I don’t have the power to see where the shower is, so I’m trying to take a shower, so I’ll let you guys know what that will happen,” the American said.
The WTA Tour said second-ranked Iga Swiatek “sitting in the dark player’s lounge and talking to members of the team,” he said in advance of his match against Diana Schneider.
Swiatek and Shnaider were scheduled to play at the main stadium after the Dimitrov-Fearnley match.
Spanish generator Redelectrica said the Iberian Peninsula was affected. The incident was evaluated and responded.
The country’s population is over 50 million. It is not immediately clear how many people will be affected.
