On Tuesday night, the Magic lost 120-89 to the Celtics in Game 5. Orlando lost the series 4-1 to Boston after making the playoffs as a #7 seed in the East.

Their 2024-25 season was thrown off the course when several key players suffered long-term injuries. On Thursday morning, Orlando’s president of basketball operations, Jeff Weltman spoke on local radio. Weltman was 96.9 in the game and he discussed a more aggressive approach this offseason. He said that magic would work through a “lens of wins and losses.”

What moves can magic make to upgrade the roster this offseason?

Today’s Jeff Worldman:

“We’re ready to turn the page of rebuilds, and we’re entering the next phase of our team and getting even more “take the lens now.”

For the first time since the 2010-11 season, the Orlando Magic had a back-to-back season with over 40 wins. From 2023 to 24, the number was 47-35 and 41-41 in 2024 to 25. Orlando played off both seasons but lost in the first round. With the offseason approaching, basketball operations president Jeff Weltman gave insight into what magic can do. He explained how the team examines the “winning lens” this offseason.

What it entails has not been seen yet. After the 2023-24 season, magic has brought one major change to their roster. They signed Kentavia Caldwell Pope into a three-year, $66 million deal. From 2024-25, Magic allowed just 105.5 points per game. It was the best in the NBA. Having a connected team defensively does not hurt the magic.

It’s their contradiction at the offensive edge. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner averaged more than 25 points per game this postseason. The next closest was Wendell Carter Jr. with 10.2 per game. In four of the five games this postseason, Magic finished with under 100 points. Jeff Weltman pointed out that if magic wants to improve offensively, it would be costly. That’s because of the financial restrictions of the league’s CBA. What is the next step in magic this summer?
