Manchester United are currently targeting the record-breaking goalkeeper who is “good with his feet” and there are signs he could rival Senne Lamence for the starting spot.
Man United consider signing new goalkeeper with rivals Lamence
Lamence’s introduction into Manchester United’s starting XI has been gradual since joining from Club Brugge at the end of the summer transfer window, with the Belgian making his first start in the 2-0 win over Sunderland before the international break.
The 23-year-old got off to a good start with a clean sheet in the opening game, making two saves from inside the box to keep Sunderland at bay, resulting in a SofaScore match rating of 7.8, the highest of any player.
The Stretford End side have clearly been impressed with their new goalkeeper’s performances, calling him “a Schmeichel in disguise”, but it’s still early days with a trip to Anfield on Sunday.
The Red Devils have joined the race to sign a new goalkeeper, although manager Ruben Amorim will be hoping Lamence will be a long-term solution for him, having struggled to find a suitable number one since the departure of David de Gea.
This is according to a report from The Boot Room, which reveals that SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atbolu has emerged as a serious target for Man United, having seen him play numerous times already this season.
Graham Bailey added that regardless of Lamence’s performance, United would like to bring in a new goalkeeper, with journalists also suggesting a deal for Atubor could be possible.
Bailey said: “United are doing a good job of evaluating goalkeepers. Even if (Senne) Rammens comes in and things go well, (Andre) Onana and (Altai) Baindir are not going to stay long term, so they still want and need another one.”
“They are familiar with their options, but we hear that Atubor is a player who has impressed United’s scouts this season. He has emerged as one of the best players in the Bundesliga and Freiburg will look to sell him in 2026.”
Record-breaking Atsubolo could be an instant upgrade to Ramen
Lamence has made an excellent start to life at Old Trafford, but the Freiburg shot-stopper has already proven he is at a higher level than the former Club Brugge player and there are signs he could be an immediate upgrade.
In the 2024/25 season, the 23-year-old broke Freiburg’s club record by not conceding a goal for 576 minutes, and went on to break the Bundesliga record by saving five penalties on the spin.
Not only has the German goalkeeper established himself as the Bundesliga’s top goalkeeper, but he also uses his feet better than Rammens, ranking in the top 1% for touches per 90 over the past year.
statistics | Noah Atubor | Senne Ramens |
Save percentage (penalty kick) | 100% | 75% |
Clean sheet rate | 34.5% | 12.5% |
Touches per game | 47.99 | 42.58 |
Freiburg coach Julian Schuster has also praised Atubor in the past: “He has good reflexes, makes good saves and uses his feet well. We are very happy to have him.”
It’s always difficult to keep two goalkeepers happy, so signing Freiburg’s star player is a risk, but there are clear signs he could challenge Ramens for a starting spot.
