Manchester United are currently considering signing the “fantastic” striker, who has already been enthusiastically backed by manager Wayne Rooney this season.
Manchester United eye rival Sesco as new striker
After taking some time to adapt to life in the Premier League, Benjamin Sesco has now found his form and has scored in his last two games, most recently finding the net in Man United’s 2-0 win against Sunderland.
United, who spent £74 million on the Slovenian striker, will be hoping Sesco can establish himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League, but that could take time given the former RB Leipzig player is only 22 years old.
With Rasmus Hojlund joining Napoli on a season-long loan deal in the summer, Joshua Zirksee is the current striker’s back-up option, but his future is in doubt, with some clubs looking to take advantage of the Dutchman’s desire to leave, with West Ham United looking to capitalize on the Dutchman’s desire to leave.
If Ruben Amorim’s side allow Zirksee to leave, it would make sense to bring in another striker, and they are currently considering signing the Premier League star, who is enthusiastically backed by Rooney.
According to reports from Spain, Man United are currently setting their sights on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is valued at around €50m (about £44m) by the south London club and has emerged as a key player.
Palace now believe they can keep the Frenchman, but United have the financial wherewithal to tempt them to sell, with the centre-forward keen on a move to Old Trafford.
Earlier this season, Rooney revealed he is a big fan of the 28-year-old given the way he occupies defenders and makes things difficult for them.
‘Great’ Mateta would be an exciting option for Amorim
Importantly, the Severin-born striker is proven in the Premier League and has maintained a very solid record in front of goal in the top flight over the past two seasons.
season | Appearance | the goal |
2023-24 | 35 | 16 |
2024-25 | 37 | 14 |
Palace manager Oliver Glasner has also praised the Frenchman in the past, saying:Inside the box is great. He has the feel that a number nine must have in the box. He makes a lot of runs where he can’t get the ball. As a striker, you often have to make runs where you don’t receive the ball, so you have to suffer. He will get paid and that will decide our match. ”
Having performed well at club level, the former Mainz player was recently given his first start for France and grabbed the opportunity with both hands, scoring in the 2-2 draw against Iceland.
As such, Mateta would be an exciting signing for Man United, and Amorim would certainly have another striker option if Zirkzee leaves.
