Manchester United secured their third successive Premier League win by defeating giants Brighton & Hove Albion 4-2 at Old Trafford last night.
Ruben Amorim was able to secure another victory and the result moved the Red Devils into fourth place in the standings ahead of this afternoon’s match.
With such a result, the 40-year-old made history during his spell in England, going on to record three successive wins for the first time since taking the reins last November.
A number of players contributed to the victory and undoubtedly secured a place in Amorim’s starting eleven for the immediate and long-term future.
However, the two players will likely receive the lion’s share of recognition from the fan base after their respective performances against Fabian Hürzeler’s side caught the eye.
Mbeumo and Cunha’s impact on Brighton game
After joining from Brentford for £71m in the summer transfer window, there were high hopes for Brian Mbeumo’s ability to flourish in attacking areas.
The Cameroonian has done just that in the past few weeks, as seen in his two-goal performance in the win over the Seagulls.
His basic stats further underline his impressive performance, with two chances created and four successful dribbles, the most of any player on the pitch at Old Trafford.
Mbeumo wasn’t the only one to shine, with Matheus Cunha also scoring an expensive extra point in the final third yesterday after his £62.5m move this summer.
Like the Cameroonian, he also found the back of the net during the win and finally scored his first goal for the Red Devils on his ninth try.
Other statistics, such as an 89% pass completion rate and two successful dribbles, highlight his impressive work in the final third, before forming an impressive partnership with Mbeumo.
However, despite the exploits of the aforementioned duo, another United player deserves a lot of praise for his performance against the Seagulls at Old Trafford.
United’s star shines against Brighton
After losing 3-1 to Brentford at the end of September, few United fans could have predicted the huge recent turnaround in form under Amorim.
The 40-year-old appears to have found a winning formula in a 3-4-2-1 system. This formation has often raised major questions during his time in command.
Mbeumo and Cunha have clearly cemented themselves in the number 10 role behind the striker, and as yesterday’s goal showed, it’s paying off impressively.
However, Amorim’s arrival has also breathed new life into many other first-team players, with Amad Diallo being just one example of a player who has taken his career to the next level under his tutelage.
The Ivorian has cemented his place as a regular starter in the Red Devils side over the last 12 months, after often being an impact player under manager Erik ten Hag.
In recent months, he has often been forced into a somewhat unfamiliar role, often starting in a right wing-back role rather than his usually preferred attacking position.
But Amad has taken on the duck-to-water position and has often thrived in such a role, as seen in yesterday’s convincing win over Brighton at Old Trafford.
The 23-year-old played 70 minutes of the contest, completing 100% of his attempted dribbles and 100% of his long balls.
He also completed 23 passes during his performance, four of which went into the final third of the pitch, but was also very unlucky not to get a penalty.

But he was equally impressive outside of possession, making four recoveries and one interception as he helped Amorim’s side claim all three points.
As a result of his performance, the Ivorian was awarded an impressive match rating of 7/10 by Express journalist Archie Griggs, further highlighting his excellent performance in the win.
There is little doubt that Cunha and Mbeumo will take much of the credit for their performances, but some of the praise certainly needs to be directed Amado’s way.
It’s no exaggeration to say that the 23-year-old has become a central figure in Amorim’s plans, and the manager deserves a lot of credit for his ability to get the most out of the youngster.
