NEW YORK – Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeboros won the US Open Men’s Doubles Championship in their second Grand Slam title of the season, edging Joe Salisbury and Neil Scopski 3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5.
The No. 5 seed team also won the French Open, which defeated Salisbury and Skupski, giving the longtime duo their first two major titles after losing in the first three finals.
“We have results this year. We’re fighting so hard, so we’re so happy to be able to do it with him,” Granolas said of his partner after Argentina and Zeboros won the $1 million title.
They were close to losing it, and the British duo held three match points leading 5-4 in the third set. However, the Granollers and Zeballos scored the next eight points and ultimately got their only rest of the match when the Granollers rushed to return Skupski’s serve back to the open corner with a 6-5 lead.
Granola provided it as fellow Spanish Carlos Alcaraz cheered him from the training room.
Salisbury won three straight games at Razzie Fram from 2021 to ’23, trying out his fourth US Open Men’s Doubles title. He and Skupski then formed a partnership this year, one of the closest things, but not perfect. The US Open was the fifth final of the year, but they dropped everything.
“We’ll continue to work hard. These finals will one day come in our way,” Skupski said.
Tight finals – Granoller and Zeboros scored a 98-97 edge in total points, but this year they brought the third Grand Slam victory for sixth seeded Salisbury and Shpski. They also won a matchup in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
“So why not try Australia,” Skupski said looking forward to the next major. “We’re going again. Hopefully there’s another great match.”
