F1 commentator Martin Brundle has Mercedes “in his hands on another star” and “another star” after his first race in Australia “epically mature.”
Antonelli was impressed with his F1 debut and finished fourth in the chaotic Grand Prix at Albert Park.
The Italian recovered from the unfortunate qualifying display and was knocked out in the first quarter with a near-perfect race drive.
Antonelli’s only mistake was a spin in turn 4, repeating George Russell’s actual mistake.
Antonelli’s P4 finish is the rookie’s best result in his first race since Kevin Magnussen against McLaren in 2014.
Evaluating Antonelli and Mercedes’ first race, Brandle wrote in Sky’s post-race column:
“His teenage teammate Kimi Antonelli continued to advance at a solid race pace despite four spins in order.
“Mercedes has another star, and is co-leading the team championship with McLaren.
“That’s irrelevant, of course, but both Mercks pitted very timely and calmly during the final time of lap 44.”
It was an impressive weekend for Mercedes as Antonelli retreated Russell, who finished third.
Mercedes’ strong start to the year
This is the best start of Mercedes’ season since 2021.
After an impressive show in pre-season testing, Mercedes was hoping for a strong start to the year.
Unlike recent seasons, the W16 is easier to drive than its predecessor, giving both drivers plenty of confidence.
Russell enjoyed a lonely race to score the podium and made the most of Oscar Piastri’s mistake in the final sector.
Mercedes heading for China’s Grand Prix this weekend is at the top of the Formula One Constructors Championship, with McLaren.
