The Dallas Mavericks appear to be set to select Cooper Flag on the first overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft.

Recent developments suggest that the Mavericks have driven past trade rumors, including superstars like Giannis Antetocomo.

Coach Jason Kidd’s response to Flag’s training reinforced the team’s beliefs. Duke’s outlook impressed the Mavericks coaching staff when they visited the Dallas facility.

Tim McMahon, who covers Dallas for ESPN, revealed Kidd’s Flag rating. The veteran coach sees similarities between the Duke forward and the legendary players of his own era.

“This is not a workout in the sense of evaluation or tryouts. This is knowledgeable so check out our facility. This will be your locker… Obviously, they’re excited about the Cooper Flag,” explained McMahon.

Kidd compared Flag specifically to Grant Hill, his 1995 co-rookie of the year winner. Both players share a versatile skill set with Duke Connections, who impressed the Mavericks coach.

“There’s been talk of Cooper Flag, and Jason Kidd says he’s looking at the shades of another duke man from Cooper Flag.

Hill established himself among the best talents of the NBA in his career. The seven-time All-Star not only won the Rookie of the Year honors alongside Kid in 1995.

Hill’s praises include a selection of one All-NBA first team and a 4-second team appearance. His point forward ability compared to Michael Jordan during his prime year.

The former Duke star excels at creating plays while scoring efficiently. Hill’s versatility made him one of the league’s most valuable players before his injuries derailed at peak times.

Kidd expects to use Flagg in similar capabilities to Hill’s main role. The rookie handles critical ball handling responsibilities and launches an offensive set.

Dallas is set to maximize the impact of Flag early in the season. Kyrie Irving’s anticipated absence creates immediate opportunities for teenage prospects.

“Cooper Flag really has the chance to play a point forward type game, especially early in the season when Kyrie Irving is on. I think J Kid can promote offensively as a teenage rookie and become a ball-imprimary guy,” McMahon revealed.

Flagg’s college record-breaking performance supports Kidd’s confidence in his abilities. The coaching staff appears to be ready to take great responsibility from day one and trust the rookie.
