The 2025 NBA Draft Lottery took place in Chicago on Monday night. Duke’s Cooper Flag is a coveted player and is the overall pick consensus #1 for June.

With a 1.8% chance to win the draft lottery, the Dallas Mavericks shockedly landed their first overall choice. General Manager Nico Harrison has already said the team will draft the Cooper Flag. Adding flags to their roster is a big deal for the future of their franchise. This offseason, Nico Harrison said that teams will prioritize adding PGs through free agents or drafts.

Against the king on March 3rd, All-Star PG Kyrie Irving tore his ACL. Since then, the 33-year-old has had a successful operation and has worked to play in the 2025-26 season. The Mavericks expect Irving to return in January if everything goes well. This means Dallas may not have a competent PG for the first four or five months of the season. So GM Nico Harrison said this offseason is a top priority for teams adding PGs to support their teams.

The depth of security guards is particularly limited in PGs. Brandon Williams and Spencer Din Widdy are the only active PGs on the current roster. Nico Harrison is hoping to change this offseason. With the addition of the Cooper Flag, PG is the only obvious need for the Dallas Mavericks. Their SF, PF, and C are all solidified with PJ Washington, Cooper Flag and Anthony Davis.

ESPN’s Shamscharania said he hopes MAV will pursue PG through trade or free institutions. One player who will become a free agent this offseason is Dennis Schroeder. The veteran PG hit the league, but the second half of the 2024-25 season used the Pistons as the backup PG. Schroeder played a key role in Detroit from the bench. Dallas needs a low-risk, high-reward PG that doesn’t break the budget. The front court is covered for Dallas. Prior to the 2025-26 season, adding depth in PGs should be a priority.
