Max Holloway is confused by Ilia Topuria, sharing a photo of herself posing on the BMF Championship Belt.
Holloway recently decided on Dustin Poirier at UFC 318 in New Orleans last Saturday, defending his actual title belt. Prior to that, Holloway was stopped by Topuria at UFC 308 in Topuria’s final featherweight fight in October.
Topuria moved to the lightweight division and became the new 155-pound champion by knocking out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 in June, and after Holloway defeated Poilier, Topuria tweeted a photo of the BMF title.
After his victory over Poirier, Holloway was asked about Topuria’s tweet and whether “El Matador” won the battle for the BMF title.
“Ah, certainly,” Holloway said at a postwar press conference at UFC 318. “At the end of the day, when the UFC doesn’t put it up, what is it?
“That doesn’t mean he’s walking around it, what he’s doing. You’ve seen (Islam’s Makhachev) and walked around with the (another) champion belt (Alexander Volkanovsky) twice. Do you know what I mean?
Topuria and Holloway are currently in the same department. Perhaps the UFC can book a rematch between the two fighters. However, it seems unlikely, as the first fight took place just nine months ago.
Both fighters will probably go on different paths – at least for now, Holloway is still confused as to why Topuria continues to call herself the BMF champion.
“It’s just crazy for me,” Holloway said. “I know you’re rich and you know everything, but that’s just a waste of money.”
