The Memphis Grizzlies traded Desmond Bain for the Orlando Magic, making it their first blockbuster move between the end of the 2024-25 season.
He was an integral part of the Memphis Grizzlies roster, but as part of the Bane Trade, the team was able to introduce Kentavia Caldwell Pope, Cole Anthony, four first round picks, and a pick swap for Orlando Magic.
The Grizzlies reached the playoffs but were swept away by the OKC Thunder in the first round itself.
The Desmond Bane averaged only 15.3 ppg, shooting 31% from the field and 21.9% from the 3-point range.
Many NBA experts watch the deal, including Chris Vernon.
Vernon is a co-host of Ringer’s podcast, “Mismatch,” and is an expert on the Grizzlies.
He says Bane is very suitable for magical young stars, and it makes sense that they would move due to the number of picks they had.
Vernon tweeted. “I love Desmond Bain. He’s a fan of Orlando and magic, you’ll love him, and he’s perfect for them.
Two Rotary Veterinary Role Players, 4 First Swaps cannot be rejected. It’s an incredible return. Grizzlies has serious assets to build it around Ja/Jaren. ”
Bane’s incredible performance at Grizzlies helped him win a five-year, $207 million contract last year.
At the time, it was controversial if he deserved to be awarded that big contract, but the Grizzlies were confident in his abilities.
The 26-year-old is a great three-point shooter, shooting 41% over the arc in his career.
After starting his career as a mere role player, Bane’s importance grew due to his ability to score and defend in Memphis.
Ja Morant was a star of the team, but in his absence it was Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. who kept the team competitive.
With magic, Bane brings the 3-point shooting that is really needed when the team finishes the bottom of the league in terms of firing over the arc.
He also adds a lot of fire to their younger teams, unlocking the possibilities of players like Paolo Banchelo and Franz Wagner.
