The Mexico City Grand Prix will be part of the Formula 1 calendar at least until the end of the 2028 season after signing a three-year contract extension.
The event at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has returned to schedule in 2015 and has seen a massive crowd and a lively atmosphere over the past decade. In 2024, over 400,000 fans were paired with the US Grand Prix on the Circuit in the Americas in late October.
All of these races show at least one Mexican driver on the grid in the form of Sergio Perez, but this season’s event will be the first unassigned event, which does not discourage the organizer from committing another three years.
“We are extremely pleased to announce that the Mexico City Grand Prix will remain part of the calendar until the 2028 season,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “Formula 1 is energy, passion and emotion, and the unique atmosphere created by Mexico City fans every year is one of the most incredibly energetic experiences of the championship.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to President Claudia Sheinbaum for his strong commitment to Formula 1, to Alejandro Soberon Kuli, who has the most fundamental leadership in the success of this event, for his strong commitment to Formula 1. Again in October of Mexico’s fans.”
Soberon is the president and CEO of Race Promoter CIE, and says the event holds significant support from local governments who have allowed the expansion to be agreed.
“We are extremely pleased to announce that the Mexican Grand Prix will be held for another three years,” Soberon said. “We are deeply grateful for the valuable support of the Mexican government, from the Mayor of the Mexican City Government to the President of the Clara Bulgada Government, Claudia Sheinbaum, and Formula 1’s Stefano Domenicali.
“This not only contributes to Mexico City’s economic development, it also promotes cities and our countries around the world. Together, we will continue to work hard to ensure that our fans have made the most of events that offer unique live entertainment experiences and have shown the world the quality of the events we organize in this city.”
