Marc Marquez’s shoulder injury means Ducati test rider Michele Pirro will make his 70th MotoGP start, replacing the new world champion at Phillip Island.
Marc Marquez was hit by Marco Bezzecchi on the opening lap of Mandalica, sustaining a coracoid base fracture and right shoulder ligament injury.
After a week of immobilization, further medical checks were carried out and what Ducati described as “minor surgery” on the right shoulder blade was carried out.
The newly crowned world champion will miss both Phillip Island and Sepang, with doubts remaining over whether he will be able to return for the final two races in Portimao and Valencia.
Pirro had expected to miss the MotoGP season for the first time since 2012 as Ducati’s A concession status ruled out a wild card.
Pirro has been called up for the Australian round in his place, but a replacement for Marquez at Sepang has not yet been decided, with Ducati also having the option of calling up a current WorldSBK rider.
“We are coming to Phillip Island, which is probably one of the most beloved circuits for all riders, due to special circumstances,” Pirro said.
“We wish Marc a speedy recovery and the opportunity to fully honor the title he won at the Desmosedici Grand Prix on track.
“Australia is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and spectacular tracks to return to MotoGP.
“This will be my 70th race in the premier class, so thank you Ducati. Let’s make the most of this weekend’s work.”
Pirro last scored MotoGP points when he finished 11th at COTA in 2023, but his best result remains fourth at Valencia in 2018.
Ducati has yet to announce who will replace Marquez at Sepang, but a current WorldSBK rider is also an option.
