Gabriel Heinze agreed to join Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta’s coaching staff, marking a major addition to the Gunners’ backroom team ahead of the 2025/26 season.
According to David Ornstein, the Argentine coach will step in replacing Carlos Questa, who recently set out to play a role at Palma.
Heinze’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by Arteta as he continues to evolve Arsenal’s coaching structure following another competitive season in the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta wanted Gabriel Heinze at Arsenal last year
Arteta had previously tried to bring Heinze to North London in 2024. He demonstrates his belief in his former Argentina International and in Heinze’s ability to add value to the Gunners coaching philosophy.
Heinze, 47, brings a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach. During his playing career, he appeared at clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Marseille.
He also made over 70 appearances for the Argentine national team and played in two FIFA World Cups.
A transition to management, Heinze played roles at Argentine clubs, including his junior Argentina and stints at Berez Saasfield. There, he was praised for his focus on developing young talent and implementing high-intensity playing styles.
Heinze brings defensive solidity to the gunners
The addition of Heinze is expected to bring fresh energy and tactical insights to Arsenal’s training grounds, with Argentine coaches working closely with the defensive forces and playing a role in player development and match preparation.
Arteta’s vision to blend an experienced coaching mind with youth development makes it important to have an elite-level football experience and an elite-level football understanding as Arsenal prepares for a tough campaign across domestic and European competitions.
Heinze will finalise his contract with Arsenal in the coming days and will join the team ahead of pre-season preparations, allowing time to merge with the team and contribute to Arteta’s plans for the 2025/26 season.
