Dricus du Plessis has entered UFC 319 for considerations for the No. 1 spot on the MMA Fighting pound for pound list.
After five rounds with the indomitable Khamzat Chimaev, Du Plessis sits outside the top 10.
It’s a tough and sudden fall for the current midweight champion, who had no answer to Chimaev’s ruthless wrestling attack. If Duplesis was arrested early and finished in the first or second round, there was a fate that many of Chimeh’s previous enemies had suffered. Perhaps Duplesis could have taken a break or simply made a costly mistake. However, seeing him completely neutralised in the fifth round, he felt that Chimaev was the legitimate middleweight king all along, and that Duplesis had simply saved his seat on the throne, making him worse.
Our ranking panel acted quickly in the aftermath of Saturday’s pay-per-view, dropping Du Plessis from 5th to 11th place. Chimaev was impressed every time he was in the cage and seeing him with gold around his waist was the last piece that MMA combat staff needed to pass by Magom Ankaraev, Tom Aspinoll, Alexander Volkanovsky, Jack Della Madalena and more.
