There was a lot of chatter about Los Angeles superstar Mookie Betts playing shortstop, but it appears that everyone around the baseball world is commenting on what they think of the situation without taking into consideration Betts’ words.
Manager Dave Roberts was asked about his idea of returning to the previous outfield setup, especially after the recent game’s release of defensive flaws.

“That’s a fair question,” said manager Dave Roberts. “I think now I’m not only trying to get Tommy Edman out, Hayson Kim, Max Muncie out, and trying to manage my playing time, but I’m not exposing Alex Freeland too much. I love how Mookie plays shorter.
Betts is well above average in short stops and has surpassed the average ranking three times, making it the 85th percentile in MLB. He is also tied third of all active shortstops, with 11 defensive runs saved that year.
According to Betts, he is more flexible than what the public argues.
“I don’t care,” Betts said of his preferences. “I play anywhere. Whatever it is.”
Another aspect of Betts’ game this season was his offense.
After he went home early from a team trip to Japan and dealt with a broken toe in June after a brutal spring that ended with a stomach bug that missed the first two regular season games of the season, the superstar was brutal slump.
After hitting .304 at .954 OPS throughout his first 15 games in 2025, Betts was hitting just .229 at .635 OPS until July.
Betts batted with an OPS of .881 in the final 15 games of .344, bringing nine RBIs and home runs at that point.
Regardless of where Betts plays on defense, his bat appears to be back in time for the most important stretch of the season. As he pointed out, if that helps the team win, then perhaps we’ll see another defensive shakeup from the .
