Betts has awarded six Gold Globes to the right field, but has opted to move to the infield. With just a month left in the regular season, how has Betts been fighting in his new position?
The star is doing very well.
Entering Sunday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres, Betts was second in a short stop on a protected defensive run. He only tracks Taylor’s walls of the Tampa Bay Rays with that defensive metric.
Betts came in 10th in the outs above average.
Overall, Betts was a above average major league shortstop and there was no doubt he would thrive in his new position. However, there were some that skeptical Betts within the organization would do so, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.
Betts responded to whether he proved whether he could do a short stop.
On the offensive side, Betts averaged .348 with two Homer and .874 OPS in his last 17 games. The numbers are a welcome sight after the Star’s continued slump throughout most of the season.
It was not clear why Betts had his career’s worst offensive year. However, some wondered whether the positional change plays a role in his struggle at the plate.
Nevertheless, Betts appears to be releasing himself from a dark day in the batter’s box, achieving similar success as the shortstop.
