Los Angeles superstar Mookie Betts missed the start of the season due to a violent stomach virus, but when he returned to the lineup it was as if he hadn’t skipped the beat.

Betts was especially headlined ring night with a 10 inning walk-off home run against the Detroit Tigers after losing 20 pounds from illness. He was also hitting Go Ahead Homer in the eight innings of the game.
However, the home run has been a happy start until 2025, and Betts has endured a relatively long, unpleasant slump ever since. The star is currently batting .258 with five home runs and 22 runs.
“I didn’t realize that so much of my underweight still affects me,” Betts told Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times. “I created a really, really, really, really, really, really, bad habit, trying to lighten 20 pounds.”
Betts is the 80th percentile in Chase percentage, the 82nd percentile in Whiff rating and the 97th percentile in strikeout percentage per baseball savant.
“It was cool at first. When I first came back, I bumped into some homers. Habits didn’t creep up all the time,” Betts said. “But they started sneaking up, and that’s what you saw here recently.
Given the shocking weight he lost in so little time after Betts got sick, there was speculation that the starting shortstop would make a stint on the injured list. However, Betts returned to the lineup a few days later, unable to contain solid food.
The concern surrounding Betts’ sweeping weight loss was how he overcompensated with the plate due to his light frame. However, it seemed that the star would not have been set after he returned to Japan.
Almost two months after the season, Betts appears to be experiencing the effects of stomach illnesses now.
