Islam Makhachev joins the rare air of the UFC Fighters and can become a two-division champion if he defeats welterweight champion Jack Della Madarena. And Chael Sonnen wants Makhachev to stay in his new Weight class.
With Daniel Cormier and Amanda Nunes being one of the rare exceptions, few fighters are allowed to carry two UFC belts at once. And only Nunes was allowed to move between divisions and defend her featherweight and bantamweight titles (Cormier was still a light heavyweight champion when he won the heavyweight belt, but did not defend her 205 pound title after becoming a heavyweight champion).
All the indications made Makhachev not interested in vacancies of lightweight titles. This is a problem for Sonnen, who thinks that Makachev should return to 155 pounds and forget to focus only on the 170 pound title.
“Islam speaks of the idea that he didn’t want to be stripped of at 155,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “He wanted to do both. If he wanted 170, he wasn’t going to abandon the 155. He was going to protect. This was his idea, he only saw what happened at once, and it was with Amanda Nunez. The scenario was very different.
“But I’m still clung to it for you. He’s still pushing that story. “I’m a man. I’ll never lose. That’s my split. I’m my belt. I’m not a problem with Ilia. Ilia needs to do well at 155. The story of Islam has never changed, but his situation wants him to accept it. Because if Jack passes through Jack, Islam can go back to ’55. Training is looking to him to live his lifestyle and be within an impressive distance to return to 155, so if he doesn’t enjoy it, he’ll carelessly put himself in the same place as Volkanovsky.”
Sonnen raises Alexander Volkanovsky, famously known for bringing him his featherweight title when he tried to take Makhachev’s lightweight belt. Volkanovski lost the match to Makhachev and then in the next title defense at 145 pounds, he was knocked out by Ilia Topuria.
As Makhachev is currently a 1-pound pound fighter in the world, he has as good a chance as a fighter staying above two weight classes, but Sonnen warns Makhachev that even a small slip-up could cost him.
“And when you’re playing an inch game, this only makes a difference, but that’s the game we’re playing,” Sonnen said. “We’re playing a game that’s close, so that’s my opinion, but that’s also a bit of my concern.
“What has to happen mentally is that Islam has to let go. That’s all. To find a new relationship, to succeed in that relationship, you have to be involved in your past.

What will Islamic Makhachev do if he defeats Jack Della Madalena? Isn’t he going to wander around in the 170 and notch some title defense? Does he have an instant shot campaign in the middleweight belt?
It would be nice if this fight was actually booked.
