Daniel Cormier is just as excited as everyone else, Canelo Alvarez and Terrence Crawford are set to end up squared. And he’s even more excited that UFC CEO Dana White will lead the promotion to the match.
The September 12 match at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will serve as the headliner of White’s first TKO boxing event. Boxing four-division champion Crawford (41-0) has moved to the 168 pound division to challenge Canelo.
Canelo escaped from his disappointing performance against William Skull last Saturday, and Canelo won the decision in a battle that saw almost all output from both boxers. The title fight was widely criticized across social media, but Canelo regained his indisputable middleweight champion status and went well to fight Crawford.
Cormier spoke about the timing of matchups on YouTube, but the UFC boss touts Canelo vs Crawford in September in front of everyone’s hearts.
“They are two of the best boxers in the world,” Cormier said. “They don’t cross the hills at all. These are incredible fighters. They’re both in their prime. Most UFC champions are not under 30. We don’t know we have male champions under 30 right now.
“That being said, Dana White will promote this. And I feel it will bring a different level of interest to (boxing) as Dana White will promote this… So they’re still in their athletic prime, I hope they’ll see it a few years ago when Canelo was a little small. Muscle, but I think it’ll be one of the biggest pay-per-views we’ve ever seen.
White is working closely with Saudi promoter Turki Alalshikh to put together the September 12th event. Alalshikh appeared as a boxing space destroyer, shelling millions of people and generating some of the most highly demanding battles in the business, including Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury Bouts. The strategy backfired to some extent last weekend at boxing events in New York’s Times Square and Riyadh, where Canelo, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney were unable to stream at Prime Spot.
Cormier is optimistic that Canelo vs. Crawford is much more persuasive, especially when white people are involved.
“It’s a massive battle,” Cormier said. “I hope it can deliver expectations and match. When you grow up and feel like they’re supposed to be together, they always put together the two best guys. It feels like we haven’t missed the windows of these two.
“On September 12th, Las Vegas Allegianto Stadium Dana White promoted it, advertised by TKO, and Riyadh season promoted it.
