Joe Rogan has the theory as to why Alex Pereira struggled with Title Phytros at UFC 313.
“Poatan” dropped his light heavyweight belt to Magomed Ankalaev following a listless five-round performance where Ankalaev controlled most of the action. Pereira’s famous knockout power was nowhere to be seen as he saw a three straight, successful defensive streak.
UFC London Fight Companion episode during Joe Rogan’s experienceLogan claims he heard Pereira is being blocked by hand injuries and illness.
“They say he fought norovirus against his broken hands and Ankaraev,” Logan said in a passing comment.
Norovirus is an infection that affects the gastrointestinal system and usually causes vomiting, diarrhea and stomach discomfort. Pereira had not spoken publicly about the illness that could have affected her entering the March 8th pay-per-view.
“He fought by breaking his toes forward,” Logan said. “When he defeated Jiri Prochazuka, he fell on his knees, remembering that he rolled into the end of the fight when he went, because his knees didn’t support him. He was basically fighting one foot in the first fight.
Ankalaev entered the title challenge with 13 unbeaten consecutive wins, using a tactical strike approach to soften Pereira, earning the most harmful punch in the second round. He continued to insist on the unanimous decision and the UFC Light Heavyweight title.
Logan gave Ankaraev full credibility for his winning performance.
“Ankaraev and Pereira, the second round (Pereira) is swinging, and he’s not the same after that,” Logan said. “Then it’s much more defensive. I saw a good breakdown of Ankaraev’s stand-up against Pereira. It was on a very high level. Especially with his front hand he’s andeading this circle’s movement with his hand to take the angle.”
It’s unclear what’s next for Pereira, a former two-division champion who quickly became one of the UFC’s most popular athletes. Perhaps he’ll be waiting for him if he wants it, but the light heavyweights don’t have a shortage of current candidates for Ankaraev and Pereira.
For Rogan’s money, he is immediately betting Ankalaev-Pereira2.
“They’re going to get it back,” Logan said. “It’s a big fight in that division, if Pereira can come in healthy. But he’s one more thing, he’s too active.”
