New York Knicks guard Malcolm Brogdon has decided to retire from basketball after nine seasons in the NBA.
Malcolm Brogdon was drafted 36th overall in the 2016 draft by the Milwaukee Bucks and won Rookie of the Year in 2017. In 2023, he won the Sixth Man of the Year Award with the Boston Celtics.
Brogdon was expected to play a key role with the New York Knicks this season after signing a one-year contract with the team a month ago.
During his short tenure with the Knicks, he struggled shooting and never scored more than five points in a preseason appearance.
Brogdon last played for the Knicks on October 13th. His sudden retirement from basketball is seen as a shock.
“Wow, this is amazing. Still an all-around guard at 32 years old who has had a solid career, but has always battled injuries,” one fan wrote.
Another fan posted: “Wow. This is pretty shocking.”
Another fan reflected on the elbow injury that derailed his career: “His elbow injury in the 2023 playoffs was really unfortunate. He was very good for a year before it happened.”
Another fan wrote, “Exclusive member of the 50-40-90 club. Enjoy being the king of retirement.”
One Knicks fan said he is hopeful for this season despite losing Brogdon, saying, “I wish him the best, but I really thought he would be a great addition to the Knicks. Luckily, we still have Deuce, Clarkson, and Kolek behind Brunson.”
News of Brogdon’s retirement came out of nowhere.
Brogdon is destined to be on the Knicks’ final roster and is quoted as saying in Abu Dhabi that he expects to be an impactful rotation player.
However, the physical and mental strain reportedly took its toll on Brogdon, causing him to lose some of his desire to play.
It’s a big loss for the Knicks, who lost Brogdon just one week before the start of the regular season.
