Quentin Grimes has been waiting quite a while to re-sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, but he has to settle for less than he wants.
Quentin Grimes was one of the few success stories for the Philadelphia 76ers last season. In the injury-plagued campaign, Grimes shined with his performance.
After arriving through trade from the Dallas Mavericks, the Grimes played really well. He averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists to assist the struggling Eastern Giants.
But now, Grimes is a free agent and hopes the 76ers will re-sign him. What slowed the process was the fact that Grimes is a restricted free agent. That means the 76ers can wait for him to meet the offer he gets.
With no offers at the table, the 76ers are stagnant at Grimes at the negotiation table. And if things continue to be static, he may have to sign a much fewer offer than he wanted.
Brett Siegel put out a comprehensive work, breaking down the situation between the Philadelphia 76ers and Quentin Grimes.
He doesn’t think it’s going to exceed $20 million per season as the Grimes hoped. Instead, he considers a three-year, $45.7 million deal to be the best option for both parties.
- Three-year, $45.7 million contract ($15.2 million AAV per season)
- Player options for the third year (2027-28 season). Grimes will allow you to maximize your value as a Philadelphia or as an unlimited free agent. ”
“To be honest, this is the best deal Grimes is trying to get at this point,” he added.
But if this is the best offer Grimes gets, it raises the question: why don’t the Philadelphia 76ers give him what they’re asking him to do?
Well, as Siegel writes, it seems that the Philadelphia 76ers appreciate Quentin Grimes’ talent. But they have some doubts as his best performance came when their star player was injured.
“He was extremely successful in Philadelphia last season, but most of the Grimes’ large performances weren’t around him, healthy, with most of the 76ers’ actual roster.
“So the Six cannot sign a massive contract with the Grimes this offseason.
“The last three-year deal allows Grimes to do just that and make more than he by betting on qualifying offers.”
Once things stand, the 76ers do not propose the Siegel above. Hopefully, both sides can reach an agreement that they are happy.
