Newcastle is aiming to reach the next level this summer by making quality additions to Eddie Howe’s team, with one position expected to be addressed to sports director Paul Mitchell being goalkeeper.
Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka have both won No. 1 spells this season, but neither of them were able to create their own positions with quality performances. As a result, it was decided that Newcastle would enter the market at the end of the season to introduce a new starting goalkeeper.
James Trafford has been a target since last summer, but Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League could mean trading is more difficult. So, Newcastle began identifying other targets.
Newcastle showing interest in Caoimhin Kelleher
According to the Chronicle, Liverpool’s Khaoimhin Keleher is a Trafford alternative. The Irish goalkeeper is expected to leave Anfield in the summer as Giorgi Mamaldashvili, who was signed in 2024 but spent a season on loan in Valencia, has arrived.
Kelleher has attracted many suitors in recent months due to her performance at Liverpool. But the prospect of Champions League football at St James Park next season could give Newcastle an advantage in his signature race.
The report says Liverpool will demand at least £40 million to say goodbye to Keleher. Nevertheless, it may be the price Newcastle would consider paying for, but Trafford would probably be a more attractive option if he was similar or even cheaper.
